A Look at the Persistent Appeal of Chimney in Vancouver Homes
Posted by Tim Wong on May 6, 2016
Chimney sweeps are one of those job descriptions that we seldom think too long about. It conjures up images of Victorian houses, archaic industrial workers, and a general hark back to the past. However, there are still a great many people out there in the world today making a living as a chimney sweep.
For one reason or another, millions worldwide have opted to eschew electrical or gas fireplaces in favour of traditional fires, and not without good reason. So why do these original fireplaces remain so popular?
Cost
Electricity and gas can be an expensive commodity, and costs worldwide are on the rise. However, the various methods required to get a traditional fireplace up and running are miniscule, or free in some circumstances. Fire bricks and smokeless fuel are available very cheaply, and from a wide range of stores and supermarkets. If you are living near a forest, woodland or company that discards pallets, wood can be available for free in constant supply. With such a readily available, cheap fuel source, it's no wonder many people stick with tradition.
Others simply find that gutting out a Vancouver chimney is cost prohibitive if it's already in place. Plumbing in gas or an electrical point can be a tremendous financial burden and for many this is just an unattractive option.
Another cost consideration is that chimney repairs in Vancouver or surrounding can be markedly cheaper than having to call out a plumber or electrician. Chimney sweeps are relatively inexpensive and do not need to be called out that often. The basic nature of a fireplace and chimney, most of the time, also makes structural repairs simple and easy. Still, though, it would be advisable that you seek the services of professionals such as Consumers Choice Roofing and Damage.
Attractiveness
There's no denying that the sight of a working, billowing chimney warms the heart and completes the look of a traditional house in the way that modern fires can't. For many, it actually adds value to their house; a traditional residence may sell for more if the original fixtures and fittings remain intact, and that includes the fire and chimney. Everyone can remember at least one time where a basic fire has made them feel cozy and at home, and for many, that's a good enough reason to keep it simple.
